Richmond, Virginia, a city steeped in history, offers much more than just a window into the past. Modern-day Richmond pulses with a dynamic craft beer scene, inviting weekend travelers and beer enthusiasts alike to indulge in a hop-infused journey. From sipping ales in historic warehouses to enjoying innovative brews in a downtown setting, a weekend beer tour of Richmond promises flavors that are as diverse as the city’s cultural tapestry.
Dog in Beer City
Richmond’s pet-friendly vibe is evident everywhere, and we availed of it, spotting locals walking their dogs around every corner. While we opted not to bring our pup, the welcoming atmosphere for four-legged friends made us wish we had.
A Sudsy Start in Scott’s Addition
Memorial Day weekend called us to embark on a craft beer expedition in the heart of Richmond. Our quest began at the Moxy Hotel, a contemporary urban retreat that became our home base for the weekend. With comfortable digs secured, we revved up for a day of brewery-hopping in Scott’s Addition, a neighborhood that has more than its fair share of watering holes.
First Pour at Star Hill Brewery
Star Hill, one of Richmond’s beer stalwarts, was our first stop. Here, the sunlit taproom and the scent of tacos from a favorite food truck welcomed us. Their broad assortment of brews, intertwined with the spicy kick of the tacos, set the stage for a tasteful adventure.

Into the Veil of Innovation
Moving on, we entered The Veil Brewing Company, where innovation flows as freely as the beer. This artistic space marries avant-garde art with beer, making every sip a sensorial delight. Their hazy IPAs and rich stouts offered a bountiful banquet for the palate.

Embracing Tradition at Vasen
Vasen Brewing Company, with its focus on tradition and sustainability, presented us with a refreshing array of ales and lagers. The taproom’s natural ambiance allowed the beers’ crisp flavors to shine, and we savored them in the midst of lively conversation.
A Day of Distinctive Brews
As the day waned, we roamed from Isley Brewing Company, known for its daring brews, to the classic ales of Ardent, and finally to the crowd-pleasing offerings at Hardywood. Each brewery brought its personality to the glass, ensuring we left with a swirl of flavors lingering on our tongues.

Savoring the Flavor of Day Two
With the aroma of malt and hops still in the air, we headed to Carytown on our second day. This eclectic district beckoned with local treasures, and we took the opportunity to explore its unique shops and murals.
A Union of Craft at Garden Grove
The day demanded refreshments, and Garden Grove Brewing and Urban Winery provided a welcomed retreat. Their fusion of craft beer and wine showcased the possibilities of the fermenting arts, complemented perfectly by the epicurean delights from Carytown Burgers and Fries.
A Moment of Respite
Back at the hotel, the Moxy’s stylish comforts prepared us for the evening ahead. A short reprieve revived our spirits for the last leg of our journey.
Evening Ales at Richbrau and Basic City Brewing
Richbrau, with its blend of classic and contemporary styles, engaged us with its rich pourings, while Basic City Brewing offered an experience of laid-back, experimental brews that were a fitting end to our grand tour.

A Feast to Remember
An outstanding dinner awaited us at The Tobacco Company, the perfect coda to a well-spent day. In this historic setting, the dishes—refined yet hearty—celebrated Virginia’s local ingredients, ensuring our taste of Richmond was a satisfying finale.

A Toast to Richmond’s Charm
Richmond’s craft beer scene is a testament to the city’s ingenuity and richness. At every turn, the art of brewing meets the art of living, creating an unforgettable timeline of taste. Our weekend in Richmond, filled with laughter, discovery, and the clink of glasses, was a testament to the city’s warmth—and there’s always room for one more in this hospitable beer metropolis.
